The GranFondo has been 3 years in development, drawing on our experience of 10 years of UK frame design, and represents our view of the ultimate in an alloy tubed framesets. It's almost a new breed!
Here are the details:
Matching frame material to purpose is equally important as getting the geometry spot on. The new GranFondo frameset is an excellent example of this philosophy. Carbon may be the latest fashion, but alloy tubes can do some things just as well, if not better than the Black wonder material. Scandium is the ideal material for a frame that needs to be responsive and lively, but retain some resiliance to cushion the blows of a long distance ride.
We have used Easton ‘GX2’, Flared,Taperwall tubing, the flared section at the headtube helps to avoid lateral flex and give a really direct steering feel, whilst the tapered butting keeps things light and reliable for years of use. Scandium has the ‘spring’ of steel but with the light weight of advanced alloy.
Carbon plays it’s part too, the ‘carbon strutt’ seat stays and Selcof carbon post take out some road buzz and the carbon fork is tuned and shaped for some vertical compliance whilst keeping that direct handling feel.
We all know that Sportives are not a ‘race’, but there is certainly a competition element in there! The GranFondo has plenty of ‘race bike feel’, it’s no slack angled tourer, but the geometry is designed to be forgiving over the distance, with longer [but not too long] headtubes and chainstays.
The GranFondo is a versatile frameset too, with mudgaurd eyelets on frame and fork [Max tyre size is 23 when using full mudguards] rack mounts. The frame/fork are designed for short [39-49mm] brakes, allowing ample choice of high end componentry.
Sportives are huge in the UK and Europe, and we think that this superb new frame ticks all the boxes.
